The purpose of this little guide is twofold: first, to aid the beginner in identifying some of the more common woody plants in the the summer or winter condition, and second, to familiarize the student with descriptive terms and the use of keys to teach how and what to look for when examining a woody plant, or a part of it, with a view to its identification. The summer keys are based primarily upon leaves and fruits; the winter keys are based primarily upon bud and twig characters, supplemented by those of bark, general habits, and fruits. The keys given are based upon the common native woody plants of the northeastern United States--about 160 genera and approximately 500 species have been included.
