24 A. Douglas Kinghorn, editor Toxic Plants
New York Columbia University Press 1979 0231046863 Hardcover. The book is in new condition. No jacket. 6 x 9 inches.
The dependency of the human race on plants as renewable sources of many foodstuffs, drugs, textiles, fuel, and building materials in generally acknowledged. However, the harmful effects produced by certain plant constituents, which result in an increasing incidence of poisoning cases in the United States each year, are not so widely appreciated. This book is not intended to be a comprehensive treatise on all substances from plants that are lethal or otherwise injurious to humans or livestock. Instead, owing to tremendous recent advances in the understanding of the chemical nature of their toxic principles, it reviews selected toxic plants which have been hitherto inadequately documented in previous texts.

83 Elizabeth B. Kassler Modern Gardens and the Landscape
New York. The Museum of Modern Art. 1964. First edition. Oversize paperback. The book is in good condition with some shelf wear. 8.25 x 9.5 inches.
The author asks, "Should less be demanded of landscape design as an art than as a science? Isn't it possible that a garden or plaza or park or boulevard must finally be judged as an essay in the tenancy of the earth? If it is to pass such a test (and some of the work shown in this book would gracefully fail), it must look and feel ecologically valid. It must appear to be of its place, not on its place, and its natural materials must seem to belong together with a more than formal relationship." She concludes, "[the artist] as he takes hold of earth, plants, and water, the materials unique to his art, let him only beware lest he destroy though his act of possession the genius of that which he sought to possess."

89 Flo Kemp Dune House

Etching. 22/100. Signed. Matted and framed. Kemp's work, both in the etching and also with the oils, reflects her quiet personality. Be it a land or a seascape, her etchings and oils are serene reflective, subtle and simple in design. Dune House is an example of her soft ground etchings. Each etching is made from zinc plates and nitric acid. They are inked a la poupe--all the colors are placed on the plate at once so that the plate has one pass through the etching press. This technique results in soft, serene, "painterly" etchings. Kemp is an active member of the National Association of Women Artists and the Catharine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club in Manhattan. She is listed in Who's Who in American Art.
